La Penitence man granted $120,000 bail on ganja charge

A La Penitence man was on Tuesday granted $120,000 bail after he denied ownership of 53 grammes of cannabis found in his house.

Timothy Badal, of 193 Middle Road, La Penitence, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, where he pleaded not guilty to a charge which stated that he, on June 15, at his home, was in possession of 53 grammes of marijuana.

Attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat represented Badal and told the court that the bedroom the cannabis was found in was an unoccupied room in the house.

Police prosecutor Gordon Mansfield objected to bail being granted. Mansfield informed the court that on the day in question, police ranks from the Guyana Police Force’s Narcotics Branch at Eve Leary went to Badal’s home and conducted a search.

His mother, who also lives there, was present when they allegedly found the illicit substance in his bedroom. When asked who it belonged to, he told the ranks he found it. He was immediately arrested and an investigation was carried out.

The Chief Magistrate granted Badal bail in the sum of $120,000, with the condition that he report to the La Penitence Police Station on Friday at 8 am. The matter was adjourned until July 9.
