A father and son accused of robbing a woman of close to $5 million in cash and jewellery, were yesterday remanded by a city court after they were jointly charged with the offence.

Richard Edwards, 48, of 30 School Street, Alberttown, Georgetown and his son, 26-year-old Imran Ali of 205 Campbell Street, Georgetown, appeared before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where they both pleaded not guilty to a charge of armed robbery.  The allegation against them is that on June 11, in the vicinity of Republic Park, East Bank Demerara, while armed with a knife, they robbed Toulula Singh of jewellery valued at $3 million and $1.7 million in cash, property of Isaiah Kumash.

Police prosecutor Seon Blackman told the court that Edwards was employed with the virtual complainant, so it is suspected that he, along with his son, planned to rob the woman, as he knows where she kept the money and jewels. He also informed the court that when the two were arrested, they gave written statements admitting to the offence.

Blackman later objected to the men being granted bail, explaining to the magistrate that the nature of the offence, its seriousness and the punishment it attracts should be carefully considered when deciding whether to grant bail or have them remanded.

Magistrate McGusty’s decision was in Blackman’s favour, as she refused bail and adjourned the matter until July 17.
