US$2M contract awarded for Chiung River hydropower plant

A contract has been awarded for the supply and installation of a 150 kW-Hydropower Plant at Chiung River, Kato Village, in Region Eight.

Director General of the Ministry of the Presidency Joseph Harmon announced yesterday that the US$2,250,880 contract for the design, supply and installation of the plant was one of a dozen which received the no-objection of Cabinet when it met on Tuesday.

Harmon disclosed during a post-Cabinet press briefing that the contract, which was awarded under the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, will be executed by B & J Civil Works. He did not have further details on hand and promised to make them available. He noted that he was simply notifying the media about the project and its cost, for which there is very detailed documentation.

Almost €1.8 million in European Union funding for the Kato Hydropower Project had expired in February, 2015. The project was meant to power the Kato school complex and surrounding areas.

Meanwhile, Harmon noted that under the Ministry of Social Protection, a $219 million contract for the construction of a Drop-In-Centre at Block ‘C’ Sophia was increased to $246.48 million. The contractor is PD Contracting

A $32.2 million contract was awarded to Builders Hardware General Supplies and Construction for the rehabilitation of Bourda Market, Georgetown. It was awarded under the Ministry of Communities. Harmon could not give specifics on the rehabilitation that will be undertaken, except to say that the works will done on the market’s interior. It is unclear if these works would require the closure of the market.

He also disclosed that other markets, including the Kitty Market, will benefit from renovation works.

Further, Harmon said that the Wakapau Secondary School, Wakapau Mission, Lower Pomeroon River, Region Two, will be extended by M. Sukhai Construction Services, following the award of a $23.27 million contract.

Additionally, under the Ministry of Communities, Gormain D’aguiar Construction was awarded a $23.89 million contract for repairs to Sand Creek Secondary School, South Central Rupununi, Region Nine.

Harmon said too that Nismes Old Road, West Bank Demerara, Region Three, will be rehabilitated at a cost of $29.1 million. The contract was awarded to Puran Brothers Disposal Inc. under the Ministry of Communities.

Also, M & P Investment was awarded a $28.92 million contract for the construction of Supply Health Centre, in Region Four, under the Ministry of Communities.

Contracts were also awarded for the supply and delivery of a second water ambulance for Region 10 and for the breakfast programme for schools in regions Five and Six.

Harmon disclosed that the $17.9 million water ambulance will be supplied by Meditron Inc. under the Ministry of Communities and will be used to transport patients from the riverine communities in the Berbice River, from De Velde to Kwakwani.

With regards to the procurement of morning meals for the breakfast programme for nursery and primary schools in regions Five and Six, Glenda’s Catering Service was awarded a $17.1 million contract, while Tee Zee Food Service was awarded a contract for $11.7 million for Region Five and Green Apple was awarded a $12.6 million contract and Sharron Davis was awarded a $3.3 million contract for Region Six. All four contracts were awarded under the Ministry of Education.

Further, for the supply and installation of New Instrument Landing System (ILS) at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) under the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, a US$980,380.80 contract was awarded to Intelcan Technosystems.

For the procurement of additional Trimble technology for the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission, Trimble Europe B.V secured a US$166,407 contract.

According to Harmon, Trimble technology is utilised by the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission for its Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) Network. This contract will allow for an additional three CORS.

He disclosed that for the supply and installation of a 22 kW-Grid-Connected Solar Photovoltaic System, a 45kW-Hybrid Inverter and a 160 kWh-Energy Storage System for the Guyana Energy Agency, Gafsons Industries Ltd was awarded a $6,730,974 contract.
