We must have a GECOM Chairman acceptable to the majority of the nation

Dear Editor,

Yesterday, by way of its Chairperson, the PNCR stated that it remains “adamant that Guyana must have credible elections and it must be preceded by a house-to-house registration process”.  Let us dissect this statement from Ms. Volda Lawrence.

What is vital for credible elections?  Firstly you must have a GECOM Chair-man acceptable to the majority of the nation.  The empirical evidence will illustrate that Mr. James Patterson was not acceptable to the majority of Guyana and was actually an imposition on this nation by a PNCR Cabal.  He was found to have been  improperly appointed by way of a unilateral process imposed by Mr. David Granger, the Leader of the PNCR.  So who brought untrustworthiness to the elections process with this unilateral appointment?  Let the record speak, the PNCR.

So isn’t it grossly hypocritical of the PNCR Chairperson Ms. Lawrence to demand credible elections when it is her leader who undermined the credibility of the elections process in the first place with the appointment of the GECOM Chair-man?

Secondly, she demands house-to-house registration?  How dare the PNCR attempt to usurp the role of a constitutional agency – GECOM?  Isn’t it GECOM’s job by way of its secretariat to decide on its elections plan?

Guyana is at crossroads today and all it wants is that the PNCR and PPP meet and decide on a GECOM Chairman.  After that this nation demands that GECOM be given the latitude to do its work in compliance with the Constitution.  GECOM has enough money, it has enough people, it had enough material, all it needs now is a Chairman.  Again the evidence illustrates that it is Ms. Lawrence’s boss who is delaying on the appointment of a GECOM Chairman so that it can conduct its work.  So how can we have credible elections when the PNC is undermining GECOM?

Have these people no shame to make these empty calls when it is they who are the principal agents that are acting against electoral progress in Guyana.

Yours faithfully,

Sasenarine Singh
