G/town leg of Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Championship kicks off tonight

The most eagerly anticipated zone in the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Championship will commence today, as the Georgetown Zone kicks-off at the National Cultural Center Tarmac with eight elimination matches.

In the opening matches, Trap Squad will oppose LA Ballers at 19:00 hours while Upsetters will battle Albouystown-A at 19:30 hours and North Ruimveldt engages John Street from 20:00 hours.

The fourth feature will pit California Square against Alexander Village from 20:30 hours, with North East La Penitence battling Stabroek Ballers at 21:00 hours and Norton Street opposing Back Circle from 21:30 hours.

In the final two matches, Sparta Boss will match skills with Judgment Yard from 22:00 hours and defending champion Gold is Money takes aim at Globe Yard at 22:30 hours. 

According to an official release from the tournament coordinator, Three Peat Promotions, “…a decision by the organisers to place the Georgetown leg at the back of the annual calendar has worked up both fans and teams to such frenzy that tonight’s commencement of seven nights of pulsating action should enjoy a massive turnout.”

The release further said, “The tournament which is celebrating its 10th year of existence will additionally offer giveaways for fans so there are incentives to be present at the National Cultural Centre Tarmac for opening night action.”

The correspondence added, “Teams are implored to be on time for a prompt start at 19:00 hours so as to facilitate the completion of games in good time. Also, fans and players are being asked to continue to exhibit the good behaviour that has been exemplary throughout the tournament’s history.”

The competition will be played over seven days. The first two match-days will feature elimination fixtures, with the respective winners progressing to the group stage.

The final elimination matches will be staged  tomorrow night at the Burnham Court. The other playing dates are July 19th, 20th, 26th, 27th and August 3rd.

The group round will be played over the following three nights, with the top two finishers from each section advancing to the quarterfinal and subsequent semi-final rounds.

The eight teams which fail to advance from the group round will comprise the Guinness Plate Championship.

Three venues are slated to be utilised. They are the National Cultural Centre Tarmac, Burnham Court and the National Racquet Centre. The overall winner will automatically seal their place in the National Championship in August.

To date Beacons [Bartica Champion], Melanie-B [East Coast Demerara winner], Brothers United [West Demerara/East Bank Demerara winner], Trafalgar [Berbice champion] and High Rollers [Linden champion] are the teams to have secured automatic berths to the national championship.
