A young man, who claimed that threats by the mother of his children to take him to court for child support led to him stealing a gold band, was yesterday jailed for two years for the crime.

Jason Thomas, who had appealed to two magistrates, Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus and Magistrate Dylon Bess, earlier this month for his release, was instead sentenced to two years in jail by Magistrate Bess. The magistrate had been awaiting the probation report for the man.

Thomas was charged with stealing a gold band, valued $120,000, from Claire Ann Rambarran on June 22nd, at Regent and Wellington streets.

Thomas, who had been pleading with both magistrates to grant him mercy, yesterday again asked the magistrate to take into consideration that he has two young children. He also mentioned that he was intoxicated and pressured on the day the crime was committed.

However, the probation report given was not in Thomas’ favour. The report contained information provided by Thomas’ mother, who wrote that her son was known for gambling and was charged before for possession of marijuana. Magistrate Bess told Thomas that he had taken into consideration that he pleaded guilty at the first chance but said that he did not have much else in his favour.
