Corporate giants Regal Stationary have continued with their social charity supporting Guyana Under-19 players Alex Algoo and Joel Spooner with cricket gear ahead of their Regional Under-19 stint.

At a simple presentation ceremony at the company’s Seaforth Street, Campbellville office, Manager Telesha Ousman said that it has become a tradition for the stationary store to encourage players to do well through supplying them with the tools and incentives they need to achieve their goals.

“We [Regal Stationery & Computer Centre] congratulate the members of the Guyana Under-19 team for being selected and wish them well in St Vincent and the Grenadines. It is a short tournament of only five One-Day matches but it is an honour to represent your country and we have decided to offer some assistance that will add comfort while away on national duties,” she said.

Algoo, an 18-year-old left handed opening batsman from Berbice, was the second highest run-getter in the Guyana Cricket Board’s Inter-County tournament with 356 runs that featured the tournament’s lone century, a belligerent 175 against Select Under-17.

“Algoo is another bright and exciting prospect in the long line of talented players that Guyana has produced. We have seen his potential and would like for him to ‘make it big’ like what so many others have done. This is our first such assistance to him but once he continues to thrive and be an exceptional role model for the game and the younger players, we will continue to support him. He has the Regal looks and touch,” she said.

The Young Warriors batsman extended gratitude to the company for their timely donation and vowed to do well and make them, along with his country, proud as he embarks on his third stint at this level and looks to earn a spot in the West Indies Under-19 side for the upcoming youth World Cup.

Unlike Algoo, Spooner, who plays for Transport Sports Club, will be making his debut for Guyana at any level despite his consistent efforts from the Under-13 levels.

Spooner, 18, is a genuine all-rounder, who had gained recognition in the inter-county tournament with his off-spin, taking 22 wickets and scoring 100 runs. He said that the donation means a lot to him personally and he will do his best for his country.   Spooner, a certified joiner, said, “I would like to say thank you to Regal for sponsoring me these footwear ahead of the Regional Under-19 tournament and I’m happy for the opportunity to go out there and play my game and help Guyana to another championship.”

While the team has not been officially announced, an 18-man squad was in training and according to information reaching this publication, the 14-man squad will depart tomorrow for St Vincent and the Grenadines with the Regional Tournament starting on July 28.
