Weather partly responsible for power outages

Inclement weather is being blamed for some of the power outages experienced in the city and some parts of the coastland yesterday.

During the course of yesterday, central Georgetown experienced approximately 10 outages.

Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) Public Relations Officer Shevon Sears-Murray told Sunday Stabroek that she could not give a full explanation for the power outages in central Georgetown. She, however, stated that based on reports provided to her, some outages occurred because of the rainy weather conditions.

In addition to Georgetown being without electricity, West Demerara and Berbice also experienced outages.

In West Demerara, residents suffered over 12 hours of outages, while some parts of Corentyne, Berbice experienced an all-day outage and other parts of the county were affected late yesterday afternoon.

A resident of Corentyne, Berbice told this newspaper that the power went out minutes after a heavy wind. She noted that up to 8pm last night, electricity was not restored. For the other sections of Berbice, electricity went after a heavy downpour.

Assistant Public Relations Officer at GPL Natalie Pindar told this publication that she was unaware of the situation in Berbice and would have to make checks with their control room to find out the cause of the power failures.

Touching on the hours of non-supply of electricity in the West Demerara region, Pindar said technicians were carrying out scheduled maintenance work when they found several issues with the power grid. She explained that they were working to remedy the issues developed and restore power to the affected citizens.

At around 7pm, the utility company posted a public advisory on its Facebook page to update residents about the situation.

The post read, “GPL wishes to inform customers from Leonora to Naamryck, WCD that we are experiencing technical difficulties with power restoration efforts. We seek your patience while efforts are ongoing to restore power incrementally in the shortest possible time.  Additionally, due to localised faults, some areas on the West Coast and West Bank Demerara are without power. Every effort is being made to address these reports,” it said.

Pindar further told this publication that GPL will be in a better position on Monday to offer a detailed explanation on what contributed to the power outages.
