A youth accused of possession of a stolen motorcycle was granted his release on bail yesterday after denying the charge.

Andrew Clarke, 19, of Lot 8 East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where he was charged with being caught with a motorcycle reasonably suspected to be stolen or unlawfully obtained on July 22nd, at East Ruimveldt.

Police prosecutor Seon Blackman objected to the young man being granted bail. He told the court that the value of the motorcycle, prevalence and the punishment the charge attracts were reason enough for Clarke to be remanded.

He also told the court that on July 14th, 2019, Ali Mohammed parked his motorcycle within the confines of a garage. When Mohammed woke up the next day, the motorcycle was missing. He went to the Ruimveldt Police Station, made a report of the missing motorcycle and on July 24th, 2019, Mohammed received information of the motorcycle being identified.

A further inspection of the motorcycle proved that even though the motorcycle’s plate number was changed, it was Mohammed’s. Mohammed then confronted Clarke about the motorcycle and Clarke explained that he was returning the cycle so it could be fixed. A report of the matter was then filed, hence the charge.

Clarke did not give any explanations in response to the prosecutor’s case. The magistrate then granted him $60,000 bail and transferred the matter to Court 1 for next Monday, when the Chief Magistrate will assign the case.
