Guinness football National Championship for Jubilee Park tarmac

With the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ National Championship slated to commence on August 9th, tournament organiser Banks DIH Limited has confirmed that the Jubilee Park tarmac will serve as the venue of the street football tournament.

Guinness Brand Manager Lee Baptiste disclosed the aforementioned information. Baptiste, who has been at the helm of the community initiative from its inception, disclosed that the venue was selected due to its overall size and accessibility to patrons.

According to Baptiste, “We anticipate a large crowd for the final and the venue has readily available parking and is accessible to various environs. It is very centralised and public transportation utilise routes that are accessible to its location so it’s an overall good choice for staging of the National Championship. The surface is also ideal for the players.”

The National Championship will conclude on August 10th. However, the venue will make its debut on Saturday in the Georgetown Championship final.

The Georgetown Championship is scheduled to resume on Friday at the National Cultural Centre tarmac with the quarterfinal and semi-final rounds, after the original July 26th date was abandoned due to rainfall.

According to an official correspondence from tournament coordinator Three Peat Promotions, “All systems are in place for a thrilling night of action. We anticipate a large crowd because of the quality of the teams that will be competing for a place in the finale. Six of the eight quarterfinalists have already lifted the coveted title, which adds to the quality that will be on show.”

The opening match of the quarterfinal round will pit Leopold Street against Broad Street in a clash of former winners at 19:00hrs, while Albouystown-B engages previous titlist Back Circle from 19:45hrs.

Prior champion Sparta Boss will take aim at Sophia from 20:30hrs, with defending champion Gold is Money facing off with previous winner Tiger Bay from 21:45hrs.

The respective winners will progress to the semi-final round.

The winner of the event will collect $500,000 and the championship trophy. They will also seal an automatic place in the National Championship. On the other hand, the second, third and fourth place finishers will walk away with $300,000, $200,000 and $100,000 respectively and the corresponding trophy.

The teams that have sealed automatic berths to the National Championship are Gold is Money (National Champion), Beacons (Bartica Champion), Melanie-B (East Coast Demerara winner), Brothers United (West Demerara/East Bank Demerara winner), Trafalgar (Berbice champion) and High Rollers (Linden champion).
