Weeks after being hospitalised in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital, Presidential Guard Winston Cooper has been discharged.

A relative on Saturday told Stabroek News that Cooper, 32, was at home recuperating but declined to give any further information as his mother was not present at the time.

On July 1, Cooper was admitted to the hospital after he was found in an unconscious state on Mandela Avenue with injuries to his head. He spent approximately three weeks in the ICU, where he remained unconscious, and was later transferred to the High Dependency Unit before being discharged.

The police, in a brief statement on July 1, had said that Cooper, a former Guyana Defence Force officer, was discovered lying in an unconscious condition around 5:30 am that day with injuries to his head. He was taken to the GPH.

Several efforts were made to contact Commander of ‘A’ Division, Marlon Chapman for an update on the investigation but calls went unanswered.

Stabroek News had previously reported that investigators were trying to determine what caused Cooper to sustain serious head wounds. They have been working to enhance surveillance footage gathered from around the area.

The man’s aunt believes that Cooper was attacked by a gang while on his way to work. She had told Stabroek News that her conclusion was made based on doctor’s reports and the injuries her nephew sustained.
