`Breezer’ Nedd Memorial football c/ships set for Sunday

The latest edition of the Clive ‘Breezer’ Nedd Memorial Masters Football championships will commence Sunday at the Georgetown Football Club [GFC] ground, Bourda.

The event, which has been dormant for several years, is being resuscitated by Nedd’s son and tournament coordinator, Shawn Fraser.

“Also known as the ‘Caribbean Fox’, Clive Nedd migrated to the USA in the late eighties where he met his untimely death on August 22nd,” a release from the organisers stated.

“Ironically he died on a football field [playing] a sport he grew to love and spent most of his life playing. His career served the likes of Santos, North East La Penitence, Guyana and the Caribbean where he distinguished himself as one of the most accomplished and durable defenders ever to play the game,” the release added.

Nedd’s crowning moment was his 1978 All Star selection where he suited up against the legendary `King’ Pele.

“To many, his biggest achievement would have been in 1978 when he was selected to play for the Caribbean All-Stars selection in Trinidad and Tobago against the New York Cosmos which included the great ‘King’ Pele. His teaming up with his two sons, Shawn and Brentnol who both represented Guyana at the youth level to help Santos win the National Senior League Championship in 1985 was a feat that will be the envy of many footballers,” the release stated.

Among the major sponsors of the event are Star Party Rentals, Trophy Stall, Beck and Sons Lumberyard, Banks DIH Limited, Humphrey’s Bakery, Clarence Barry, Gordon ‘Blacks’ Ashford and Junior Walker.

Registration of the teams and the disclosure of the subsequent fixtures will occur tomorrow at the same venue from 18:00hrs.
