A week after the new administration of the Guyana Cycling Federation was installed, the body will be sending a four-man team to represent Guyana at the Tour of Tobago scheduled for October 1-6.

This is according to Racing Secretary, Malcolm Sonaram who told this publication that five names are currently in contention for the four spots.

Sonaram said the selections will be based on performances over the year including the most recent Urban Benjamin Memorial Road Race.

The individuals under consideration are Michael Anthony, Team Cocos’ Jamaul John, We Stand United’s Briton John, Evolution’s Paul De Nobrega and Trojan/PSL’s Curtis Dey.

Curtis Dey

Apart from Dey, the other riders finished first to fourth in the mentioned race.

As it relates to the circumstances of the tour, Sonaram explained that because of the short notice, only accommodation will be catered for while the cost for transportation and meals will be footed by the federation.

Sonaram disclosed that the body intends to be as transparent as possible and has formulated a criteria in order to come up with the best riders.

The former cyclist, noted that he has been an administrator of a cycling page on social media which has for years calculated points for riders and as such, will be used as a base for the selection currently.

According to a statistical chart compiled by the social media page, Jamaul John and Anthony both have four wins this year and have the most wins over the last five years with 28 and 21 respectively.

Briton John

The chart also featured Briton John with three wins, Paul De Nobrega (two wins), Dey (one win), Romello Crawford, (six wins), Andre Greene (five wins), Akeem Wilkinson (two wins), Walter Grant Stuart (two wins) and Balram Narine (one win).

Sonaram pointed out that the federation is currently in discussion to set out a criteria list for overseas riders one of which is that they must be licensed under Guyana, must participate in the National Championships and submit their results on a monthly basis for races they have participated in, to be verified.

Heading forward, Sonaram said that there will be an “A” team and a “B” team updated on a monthly basis with the top five riders in the first group and another five in the second group. Riders will be able to make the move upwards are downwards based on their performances.
