HBA stages successful Summer Camp

The Hercules Basketball Academy [HBA] successfully staged the second Bartica Basketball Camp which was held at the community center ground during the previous weekend and targeted the under-11 to under-18 age groups.

“I would like to extend sincere thanks to the Guyana Basketball Federation, Grace Kennedy Money Services, National Sports Commission, Banks DIH, Bartica Regional Democratic Office, Bartica Basketball Association and the Plaisance Guardians Basketball Club for their support and sponsorship of the HBA Bartica Basketball Camp 2019.

Without same, the activity would not have been possible,” HBA head Junior Hercules stated in a press release.  The camp attracted 35 participants from the nine schools. They were St. Michael’s Private School, Bartica Secondary School,  Three  Mile Secondary, North Georgetown Secondary, St John’s Baptist Primary, St. Anthony’s Primary School, Three  Mile Nursery School, Marian Academy and President’s College. Among the areas that were covered during the outreach programme were  dribbling, shooting, passing, defensive techniques and rules of the game as well as life skills and scholarship guidance.

Several students were recognized for their abilities and will be considered for future national team mentorship programmes. Joshua Garraway, 14, was adjudged the Most Improved Student and Most Valuable Player [MVP] of the camp, while 14-year-old Ian Gomes copped the Best Ball Handler award. Tyrese Gomes, 16, was adjudged the best Natural Scorer.

 Brith Persaud, 15, secured the highest score on the IQ Test. Also, 14-year-old Dearon Canterbury and Rhys Belle alongside 12-year-old Giovanni Tracy were recognized for their improved abilities. All participants received certificates of participation.  Meanwhile two exhibition games were featured during the outreach. Plaisance Guardians defeated the home side Bartica Wranglers 32-20 on Saturday before prevailing 57-50 on Sunday. Both games were held at the Community Center court.
