A man has been sentenced to three months in prison after pleading guilty to assaulting his wife by whipping her with a cable.

Shawn Gonsalves, 32, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday on a charge of assaulting his wife so as to cause her actual bodily harm.

The charge stated that Gonsalves committed the offence on September 4th, 2019, at David Street, Kitty. He pleaded guilty to the charge after it was read to him by Senior Magistrate Leron Daly.

According to Police prosecutor Sanj Singh, wife had been at home putting her child to sleep when Gonsalves arrived and an argument ensued. Gonsalves then picked up a wire cable and dealt his wife several lashes about her body.

She was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital to seek medical attention after a report was made to the Kitty Police Station. Gonzalves was later arrested, hence the charge.

After listening to the information given by the prosecutor, Magistrate Daly sentenced Gonsalves to three months in jail for the offence.
