A man hired as a security guard for a Regent Street store found himself before a city court yesterday charged with stealing 12 dresses from the business.

Lenno Alexander, 28, of Lot 317 Crane Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The charge, which was read to him by Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty, states that on September 7th, at Regent Street, Georgetown, he stole 12 dresses, valued $60,000, from his employer, Sunil Teotia.

Police Prosecutor Quinn Harris objected to the guard being granted bail as he reminded the court that Alexander was hired to protect the store and stop people from shoplifting and yet he was the one being charged with the same offence.

According to information related to the court by Alexander’s attorney, on the day in question his client was leaving the store when the owner asked to check his lunch bag. The 12 dresses were found and he immediately denied any knowledge of how the dresses got there. The lawyer claimed that a porter at the store admitted to putting the dresses into the man’s lunch bag.

Magistrate McGusty subsequently released Alexander on $40,000 bail and the matter was adjourned until September 23rd.
