Leon Murray, who was given time to find a total of $60,000 in compensation for assaulting a neighbour and damaging his glasses, was jailed yesterday after he reported that he was unable to get the money.

Murray was sentenced to 18 months in prison by Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty in Georgetown.

Murray on Monday had admitted to the charge that on September 5th he had inflicted grievous bodily harm upon Shawn Solomon and also damaged the man’s spectacles.

Murray had explained to the court that he and Solomon were in an argument and that Solomon armed himself with a knife and a piece of wood, which he used to harm him. Murray said that he became upset and threw a brick toward Solomon’s face, which struck the man on the nose and caused the damage.

While Murray was granted time so he could gather enough money to compensate Solomon instead of going to jail, he told the court yesterday that he could not make contact with any of his friends or family, so he would not be in a position to hand over any amount for the compensation. As a result, he was sentenced to serve jail time.
