A 25-year old Sophia resident, who allegedly set his lover on fire because she refused to speak with him, was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with attempted murder.

Wazim Perreira was not required to plead to the indictable charge after it was read to him, during an in-camera hearing, by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in Georgetown.

The charge alleges that Perreira on September 9th, at Sophia, with intent to commit murder, unlawfully and maliciously wounded the woman.

According to police, on the day in question around 1 pm, Perreira requested to talk to the woman at her Sophia home and requested to speak with her but she refused.

He left the premises but allegedly later returned with a container containing gasoline, which he threw on the woman after which he set her on fire. Perreira then tried escaping but the woman’s screams alerted the neighbours, who apprehended him. The matter was reported and Perreira was arrested.

The prosecutor objected to bail citing the serious nature of the charge and told the court that the woman is still hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she is being treated for second degree burns to her face, abdomen, chest and back.

Perreira was subsequently remanded and told to make his next court appearance in September 25th.
