Taxi driver denied bail on gun charge

A taxi driver was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with the illegal possession of a gun that was found in his vehicle.

Leon Anthony Welcome appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in a Georgetown court, where the charge was read to him.

It is alleged that the accused on September 17th, at Mandela Avenue, Georgetown, had a .357 Taurus Magnum revolver in his possession when he was not the holder of a firearm licence.

Welcome, 44, of Lot 794 Pattensen, Turkeyen, denied the charge.

Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield told the court that on the day in question, at about 9.50 am, police, acting on information, went to the KC Taxi service on Mandela Avenue and contacted Welcome, who operates motor vehicle HC 1467 from the base. A search was then carried out on the vehicle and the firearm was found under a mat. Welcome was then told of the offence, and cautioned. Mansfield noted that it was under caution that the defendant admitted to the crime.

There was then an objection made by the prosecutor to bail being granted to the accused, on the ground that no special reason was presented to the court.

Subsequently, the Chief Magistrate remanded Welcome to prison and adjourned the matter until October 11th, when it is expected to be heard in the courtroom of Senior Magistrate Leron Daly.
