A taxi driver will now have to serve two years behind bars after he pleaded guilty to two charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

William Ramsey, 38, of ‘B’ Field, Sophia, Georgetown, was yesterday taken before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that Ramsey, on August 22 at Mandela Avenue, Georgetown, had in his possession, a .38 revolver without being the holder of a firearm licence.

The defendant was also charged for illegally having five rounds of matching ammunition and a spent shell in his possession when he was not the holder of firearm licence.

The man who was unrepresented in court told the Magistrate that he bought the gun for his protection because he was the victim of a recent robbery.

As such, the Magistrate chose to exercise leniency and sentenced Ramsey to only two years imprisonment, based on his early plea.

The facts presented in court stated that acting on information on the day in question, police ranks intercepted the man on Mandela Avenue where he was searched and the gun, along with the ammunition were found in his possession.

The court heard that Ramsey had told officers that he bought the gun while he was in the interior.
