A father of eight, who was allegedly found with marijuana in a milk tin, was granted bail when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Troy Grant, 43, pleaded not guilty to the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking when he appeared before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty. It is alleged that on September 21st at Hardina Street, Georgetown, he had in his possession 156 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

Grant was represented by attorney Patrice Henry who told the court that his client is a father of eight, has an unblemished record and no pending matters at any court. He also said that when Grant was arrested, he was at his workplace and police ranks who were in the area, approached him and conducted a search on him. Henry said that according to his client, the alleged narcotics were found in a bin along with other items. He said that the items were not found on his client.

Grant told the court that on the day in question, he was taken to the police station and asked a series of questions. He said that he expected to be released on bail but instead was brought to court.

Police Prosecutor Seon Blackman told the court that according to his facts on the matter, on the day in question, ranks were on mobile patrol and while in the vicinity of Hardina Street, a police constable observed Grant acting in a suspicious manner. Blackman said that Grant was standing on a bridge when the ranks approached him and requested to conduct a search on him. It was then that they allegedly found the narcotics in a milk tin.

Henry raised doubts about the prosecutor’s facts saying, “I find it suspicious that a person would be walking around town with a milk tin.” Magistrate McGusty agreed and the prosecutor said that he could only go with what is stated in the file.

After listening to both sides, the magistrate granted Grant bail in the sum of $150,000 and ordered that he lodge his passport and report to the Alberttown Police Station every Friday at 9 am, a condition requested by the prosecutor.
