Mechanic fined for stabbing shop owner with scissors

A young mechanic was yesterday fined after he was found guilty of wounding a shop owner in the vicinity of the Merriman Mall in Georgetown.

Charged for the crime was Brandon Singh, 20, who was tried for unlawfully wounding Roy Collins on May 11, 2019.

After analysing the evidence presented to the court by the prosecutor, Georgetown Magistrate Rhondell Weever yesterday ruled that the defendant was guilty of the crime.

She then fined him $50,000, or a default sentence of three months behind bars if he could not pay the fine.

During Singh’s arraignment in May, Collins had told the court that on Saturday, May 11, 2019, at around 4.40 pm, he was at his shop when he noticed Singh and others in his company acting suspiciously in the area.

He further told the court that it was not the only time that he had observed Singh and his companions lurking around the area. He said they had been coming and going for some time, stealing from customers and passersby.

The prosecutor had noted that Collins engaged them, in an effort to let the young men know he was suspicious of what they were up to and to advise them against it.

Singh, however, got annoyed by Collins interfering with his companions and called them away.

Singh then stepped on a piece of fabric belonging to a customer, who was at the time at Collins’ shop. An employee at the shop accused Singh of purposely stepping on the material, and Collins then intervened in the back and forth exchange between the two men.

The young man then started an argument with Collins, on whom he eventually inflicted a puncture to the left side of his abdomen with a pair of scissors.
