A 27-year-old Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo man is expected to face a retrial after a jury failed to reach a verdict in his trial for the alleged rape of a 13-year-old girl.  The charge against Romal Jewan states that on September 7th, 2012, in the county of Essequibo, he raped the girl.

After several hours of deliberation, the jury informed trial judge Simone Morris-Ramlall at the Sexual Offences Court in Georgetown that it could not come to a verdict. Justice Morris-Ramlall subsequently told Jewan, who was represented by attorneys Paula and Brandon De Santos, that he will have to face a new trial at a time to be decided by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Jewan will remain out on bail until his next trial.
