Police probing reported callous behaviour by rank towards biker, child

The police are said to be investigating the alleged disorderly behaviour by one of its ranks towards a motorcyclist in the presence of a minor.

In a Facebook post, Attorney Nicola Sanford detailed the incident which she said she witnessed on Tuesday night.

The post which was widely circulated was eventually bought to the attention of the Guyana Police Force.

Police spokesman Jairam Ramlakhan yesterday told Stabroek News that the police are looking into the allegation.

Ramlakhan said the post was bought to the attention of Commissioner of Police (ag) Nigel Hoppie and the police were up to yesterday afternoon trying to determine the location where the incident took place.

Sanford in the Facebook post said that upon noticing the motorcyclist towing a child without a helmet, a police vehicle decided to “cut across” traffic and “cut” her off before parking in front her vehicle.

She explained that a rank then exited the police vehicle with a “long gun” and proceeded to allegedly assault the motorcyclist, scaring the child.

“One (police) jump out with a long ass gun in hand; snatch the man (motorcyclist) by his shirt (i swear he was a wanted criminal) the child got scared and started screaming,” the post read.

Sanford further said in the post that the motorcyclist continued to plead with the police to allow him to “pull over” in the corner. “The man (motorcyclist) busy pleading with the police to desist from holding him and allow him to pull over in the corner, the police now says (in the presence of the child) “ come off this (expletive) bike; push de (expletive) bike in de corner),” Sanford added.

She said that child, who is about between 7 to 8 years old became confused and jumped off the motorbike during which he burnt his foot on the exhaust.

Sanford noted that the motorcyclist tried to attend to the injured child but was prevented by the police who allegedly took the keys out the motorbike.

“….More screams now the man (motorcyclist) now wants to attend to the child n was prevented from doing so by the police who took the keys out his bike and continue in his profanity,” she stated.

“The man (motorcyclist) simply ask him (police) not to use profanity in the presence of the child and what is the reason for the behaviour …. ..now the police mad cause he is being ask not to break the law ( use of profanity/disorderly behaviour, excessive force ) …told the cyclist, ‘you doing a bundle a (expletive)  on this road, towing a child without helmet and riding without helmet and telling me don’t tell u nothing? Push duh bike to d station’ while he took away his bike keys,” the post further detailed.
