Corentyne man drowns after falling off bridge

A Toopoo Village, Coren-tyne man lost his life on Wednesday after he fell into the Toopoo Pump Station canal.

Dead is Joseph Lloyd Bownauth, 22, a carpenter of Toopoo Village, Coren-tyne.

According to information gathered, Bownauth left home on Wednesday to head to the canal to fish with two friends as they would often do.

However, during the fishing trip Bownauth fell from bridge into the canal and disappeared.

The two other lads on the trip alerted persons who rushed to render assistance.

Bownauth’s body was discovered one hour after he fell and was taken to the Ramoo Funeral Parlour located in Rose Hall, Corentyne. It is currently awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Bownauth’s wife  is expecting their first child.

Members of the community disclosed that the bridge is in need of rehabilitation and about a year ago another person had fallen off the bridge as well.

The residents also noted that school children would sometimes use the bridge.
