A Harris Paints employee was yesterday charged with robbing the company of over $7 million in a hold-up just over a week ago.

Tarquin Atkins, 22, of Lot 356 ‘B’ Field, Sophia, appeared before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus and was remanded to prison on an armed robbery charge.

It was alleged that on November 16th, at Harris Paints, located at Lots 10-13 Water Street, Georgetown, while he was in the company of others and armed with a gun, Atkins robbed Janelle Williams of $7.7 million, which was the property of Harris Paints.  The unrepresented youth denied the charge.  Williams was said to have secured the money the day before. The next day, she noticed the suspects in the store. One of them was seen putting on a black mask moments before a gun was pointed in the air and the store’s occupants were told to get on the floor. Williams ran into the salesroom, where she was later found.

The police prosecutor objected to Atkins being released on bail. He reminded the court that a firearm was used, a large sum of cash was taken and he highlighted the nature and seriousness of the offence.

As a result, Atkins was remanded until December 9th.
