Security guard charged with firing shotgun in public

A security guard was released on $100,000 bail last Friday after he denied firing a shotgun in public and causing injuries to a woman who was hit in her eye and knee.

Anthony Grannum, 30, of 14 Lyng Street, Charlestown, Georgetown, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where he pleaded not guilty to the charge that on October 27th, 2019, at Charlotte Street, Georgetown, he discharged a 12-gauge shotgun within 100 yards of a public space.

Police Prosecutor Christopher Morris told the court that on the day in question, Grannum was on duty at the El Sol Hotel, located at 205 Charlotte Street, Georgetown, where he works as a guard. He was armed with a 12-gauge shotgun as well as 12 matching rounds.

The prosecutor said that Grannum was seated on the third floor of the building with the firearm pointing downwards when he squeezed the trigger and a round was discharged from the gun. As a result, the pellets hit the ground and then ricocheted and eventually hit a woman in her right eye and right knee.

The injured woman fell to the ground and was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where she remains a patient.

Prosecutor Morris made no objections to bail being granted to Grannum. However, he asked that conditions be attached if bail were granted.

Moments before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly could speak, Police Prosecutor Richard Harris stood and asked the court to remand Grannum to prison on the grounds that the woman was still hospitalised.

He then highlighted the fact that a gun does not discharge on its own and that at the time Grannum was being callous and should be remanded for his actions. He also said that with Grannum being a security guard who would have had training to use a gun, it was no accident that the gun went off.

After listening to the facts, Magistrate Daly released Grannum on $100,000 bail. She also told him that he must lodge his passport with the court and report to the Alberttown Police Station every Monday until the hearing and determination of the trial. His next court appearance will be on November 29th.
