Fugitive accused of killing wife held at Mahdia

After managing to elude the police for more than six years, a 36-year-old gold miner who is accused of fatally stabbing his wife at Tenapu Backdam, North West District in 2013 was arrested on Tuesday.

Regional Commander of Region #1 (Barima-Waini) Senior Supertindent Wendell Blanhum yesterday told Stabroek News that Floyd Rodrigues was arrested at Mahdia.

He is presently in custody assisting with investigations.

Blanhum said that the case file in relation to the matter will be re-submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) who will determine the way forward in the matter.

Rodrigues was on the run since July 23, 2013, when he fled after he allegedly stabbed his then 18-year-old wife; Gwyneth Alexander to death at Tenapu Backdam, North West District.

Stabroek News had reported that the decomposed body of Alexander was discovered around 10 am in a shop.

After committing  the crime, Rodrigues had allegedly fled with his seven-month-old baby boy who he later handed to relatives after informing them that he had killed Alexander.

By then he had already left the area.

This newspaper had previously reported that

persons kept going to the shop but found it locked. Persons who usually bought goods at the shop where the couple also had their living quarters visited and found it strange that not only was the shop locked but that they did not hear a baby crying.

It was at this point that one of them decided to peep through a hole and it was then that a foot was spotted.

Relatives and the police were later contacted.

It was the police who had broken in and found Alexander but at that point could not tell if she had been murdered.

A post-mortem examination revealed that she sustained a stab wound which punctured her liver.

Her mother Sharon Jones had told this newspaper that Alexander was a victim of constant physical abuse and infidelity.
