District Five’s Morvin Hamilton and Tia Azore of District 10 emerged winners of the male and female Open 10k road race of this years’ 59th National Schools Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships which got underway yesterday.

Starting in the village of Mary and ending at the finish line inside the National Track and Field Centre, at Leonora, Hamilton and Azore were each given rousing applause as their entry came just after the opening ceremony.

Hamilton, 18, stopped the clock in a brisk 34 minutes and 51 seconds to win the event he placed third in last year.

His emphatic victory was four seconds faster than Rickie Williams’ winning time in 2018.

He bested fellow podium dwellers, Calvin Williams (District 15) and Evander Seceendino of District Nine. Williams ran in in 36 minutes and three seconds while Seceendino crossed the line half a minute later.

On the distaff side, Azore amazingly crossed the tape in 45 minutes and 57 seconds. Judy Lannis (46m:14s) of District Nine and Odessa George (50m:20s) of District Three  snared silver and bronze.

Action continues today with swimming and cycling from 09:00hrs at the Aquatic Centre and the National Park. Track and Field action also resumes at Leonora tomorrow from 09:00hrs.
