Volleyball ‘Spikedown’ set

The inaugural Guyana Volleyball Federation’s (GVF) ‘Spikedown 2K19’, was officially launched yesterday at the office of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Homestretch Avenue.

The event which commences on November 30th at the National Gymnasium, is the brainchild of second year University of Guyana Law students Andre Jagnandan and Kristoff Shepherd.

Teams expected to compete in the Men’s Tournament will emanate from the counties of Berbice, Demerara and Essequibo.

Speaking at yesterday’s press conference Director of Sport Christopher Jones said, “The NSC is pleased to be associated with the tournament, when we were approached we recognized that volleyball was dormant and we decided to come on board.”

Jones urged other associations to promote more competitions as the NSC is always willing to lend support, adding that the entity is open to the idea of sponsoring a Male and Female volleyball championship before the conclusion of 2019.

Meanwhile, GVF President Levi Nedd praised the students for conceptualizing the tournament which illustrates the importance of academia and sports, adding that the event will be to scout players for national selection in 2020.
