Elite teams storm into Streetball quarterfinals

Tournament heavyweights Sparta Boss, Bent Street, Rio All-Stars, Gold is Money, Back Circle and Leopold Street progressed to the quarterfinals following round of 16 victories Saturday in the inaugural Rio Indoor Streetball Championship.

 In front of a large crowd at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, the quintet of Sparta Boss, Rio All-Stars, Bent Street, Leopold Street and Rio All-Stars, stormed into the elite eight section following convincing victories. Gold is Money, another favourite team’s victory was unconvincing.

Newcomer Rio All-Stars highlighted the night with a 5-0 thrashing of Tiger Bay.

Cecil Jackman recorded a double in the third and 15th minute while Kelsey Benjamin added a brace in the fourth and 17th minute. Job Caesar scored the team’s other goal in the 12th minute.

 Similarly, Bent Street crushed Sophia 4-0. The quartet of Pernell Schultz, Daniel Wilson, Clive Nobrega and Adrian Aaron scored in the fourth, seventh, ninth and 14th minute apiece.

Sparta Boss dismissed the challenge of Avocado Ballers  3-1  through goals from  Eusi Phillips, Ryan Hackett and Deon Alfred netted in the second, 15th and 18th minute respectively.

 Wesley Greenidge netted in the 13th minute for the losers.

Likewise Back Circle made light work of Broad Street 4-1. National forward Trayon Bobb registered a hat trick in the second, fourth and eighth minute. Adding a goal in the seventh minute was Jermaine Beckles. For Broad Street, Brad Evans netted in the sixth minute.

Meanwhile, Leopold Street brushed aside Alexander Village 4-1. Darren Benjamin tallied a brace in the 15th and 17th minute. Contributing goals in the fifth and 14th minute were Rafael Edwards and Dorwin George correspondingly.

 For the losers, veteran forward Shem Porter netted in the ninth minute.

Gold is Money edged Albouystown 2-1. Josiah Charles and Randolph Wagner scored in the eighth and 24th minute respectively while Omari James scored in the 16th minute for Albouystown.

 In other results, BV squeaked Showstoppers 3-2 and Future Stars defeated Kingston 2-1. The respective winners will now face-off in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
