Man jailed for two years for $2.2M BMW fraud

A 58-year-old trader, who was tried in absentia for defrauding a man of over $2 million, was yesterday sentenced to two years in jail after he was found guilty of the offence, while his co-accused was freed.

Compton Beckles of Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown, and Jillian Flacher were charged with the offence, which stated that on November 27th, 2018 at Georgetown, with intent to defraud, they obtained from Shaheed Ally a total of $2.2 million by falsely pretending that they were in a position to sell him a BMW vehicle.

The trial was conducted by Magistrate Annette Singh in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 11. Flacher was present but Beckles was absent during the trial and never attended court after he was granted bail for the offence.

At the conclusion of the trial, the magistrate dismissed the matter against Flacher and sentenced Beckles to two years in jail. She subsequently issued an arrest warrant for him.
