Newcomer Aroima and Winners Connection secured hard fought wins, when the Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA) year-end Championship continued on Sunday.

Staged at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC), Linden, Aroima upset Amelia’s Ward Panthers 1-0. Javon Archer separated the two teams with a 20th minute conversion.

It was a fortuitous conversion which occurred compliments of a goalkeeping, as an initial free-kick was spilled by the custodian, allowing the forward to simply slot home from inside the six yard box unchallenged.

Meanwhile Winners Connection squeaked past Hi-Stars 4-3. Damian Williams bagged a double in the eighth and 12th minute while Marley Davidson scored twice in the 36th and 69th minute. For the loser, Elijah Samuels, Osapho Ross and Martin Leacock scored in the 10th, 20th and 65th minute respectively.

The tournament continues tomorrow at the same venue with another doubleheader. In the opening match, Amelia’s Ward Panthers battle Botofago from 19:00hrs while the feature match will pit Silver Shattas against Coomacka at 21:00hrs.

The event features 10 teams divided in three groups. Group-A consists of Coomacka, Net Rockers and Silver Shattas, while group-B consists of Hi-Stars, Winners Connection and Capital FC. Group-C is made up of Topp XX, Amelia’s Ward, Aroiama and Botafago.

The other playing dates are December 20th, 23rd, 26th, with the semifinals pegged for the 29th. The grand final will occur on January 1st.
