DPP advises against charge in primary school rape case

The Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has recommended that no charge be filed against any of the primary school students accused of the rape of a fellow student.

Instead, counselling has been advised.

The Ministry of Education almost three weeks ago issued a statement where it noted that the case was being actively investigated. The Region Four (C) Commander, Assistant Commissioner Royston Andries-Junor, yesterday told Stabroek News that the case file was sent to the DPP for advice and it was returned late last week to the police. Commander Andries-Junor revealed to this newspaper that the DPP recommended that no charges be instituted and further recommended that those involved undergo counselling.  It was previously reported that the assault, which occurred in a school’s toilet, saw the involvement of more than six students.

The perpetrators are said to be a group of boys from a higher grade than the victim, who is six-years-old. Following the disclosure of the alleged attack, parents of some of the students of the school staged a protest to press for the removal of the accused perpetrators, while expressing fear for their own children who attend the school. The ministry, while announcing the investigation, asked that persons desist from sensationalising issues relating to minors after a number of reports began circulating on social media about the case.
