Daquan Robinson, who admitted to impersonating a policeman in order to commit robberies, was yesterday sentenced to two years in prison.

Robinson, 21, appeared before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in Georgetown, where he was sentenced to two years behind bars for robbing Gary Hartman.

He had previously admitted that on December 8th, 2019, at Merriman Mall, Bourda, while he was armed with a gun, he robbed Hartman of a quantity of articles, valued at $43,000.

Robinson, who also faced three similar charges, had been remanded to prison as the magistrate awaited a probation report to decide on his sentence.

At yesterday’s hearing, the probation report on Robinson was read to the magistrate, who heard that he had dropped out of school around the age of 15 due to what he says were financial difficulties although his mother was not aware of what he had done.

The court also heard that he and his mother are constantly in conflict due to his choice of friends and lifestyle. As a result, he had moved out and was working with his grandfather in construction work.

During his last appearance, he had told the court that he had no fixed home nor any financial support but the probation officer informed that according to his mother, this was not true. She said Robinson’s mother had provided him with all his necessities but he chose to move out of their property that because she does not approve of his lifestyle, including his use of marijuana.

At his arraignment, Robinson had told the court that he was hungry and so he decided to buy a fake gun and pretend to be a police officer as it made it easier for him to rob his victims. He had approached Hartman at the mall and told him that he was a police officer but he refused to produce a badge number. He then pulled out a fake gun and pointed it at the man before relieving him of the items mentioned in the charge.

Meanwhile, Robinson was also charged with robbing Keon Crandon of $600 on December 7th, 2019, at Church Street, Georgetown, while being armed with a gun. It was also alleged that on December 8th, 2019, at Orange Walk, Bourda, he stole a phone valued $5,000, which was the property of Desmond Daniels. It was also alleged that on December 8th, 2019, at Orange Walk, Bourda, he had in his possession two iPhones, suspected to be stolen or unlawfully obtained.

In relation to the attack on Daniels, the court had heard that Robinson had taken the man’s phone out of his pocket while he was asleep in a chair. He then made good his escape. The court was also told that Robinson had approached an officer who was at the mall and told him “What you doing here? Get out of this area.” The same officer later arrested Robinson.

Robinson was told that he would be brought back to the court on January 16th, 2020, for report on the remaining charges against him.
