AG denies calling for postponement of elections

Attorney General (AG) Basil Williams has refuted claims made by attorney Anil Nandlall that he has called for the postponement of the March 2nd general and regional elections during a court hearing on Thursday.

In fact, Williams has said that the claim “couldn’t be further from the truth.”

In a video uploaded to his Facebook page and in comments made subsequently, Nandlall accused Williams of explaining in very clear language to the Appeal Court that the intention of his action was for the court to order a postponement of the elections and to order a new national register of registrants to be compiled through a house-to-house registration process and to exclude all persons not resident in Guyana. The case to which Nandlall refers is the state’s appeal currently being heard by the Guyana Court of Appeal, in which it argues that persons not registered in Guyana at the date of registration should not be allowed to vote.

Williams said that he would not respond to Nandlall’s comments on the case itself since this matter is still before the court and therefore could not be publicly discussed. He, however, added that note must be taken that during the court hearing on Thursday Nandlall attempted to make similar statements purporting that he (Williams) was calling for the postponement of elections and was corrected by acting Chancellor Yonette Cummings-Edwards.
