Sophia man awaits sentencing for snatching purse

A man is now awaiting sentencing after admitting to stealing a woman’s purse in an attack in the city.

The Georgetown court of Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus yesterday heard that Daniel Jackson, 19, of ‘B’ Field, Sophia Squatting Area, stole the purse belonging to Linda D’Oliveira-Henery.

Following his guilty plea, Jackson, who was later apprehended by a public-spirited citizen, told the magistrate he had been roaming the streets because he was hungry.

Prosecutor Tracey-May Gittens told the court that on the February 14th, 2020, on Thomas Street, South Cummingsburg, Jackson rode up behind D’Oliveira-Henery and snatched her purse before making his escape along Thomas Street, Cummingsburg.

She said a public-spirited citizen who witnessed the attack gave chase behind Jackson and apprehended him. A stolen cellphone, valued at $60,000, a sum of $9,200 cash and the purse, worth $3,000, were found on Jackson and he was then taken to the Alberttown Police Station for further questioning.

The items were identified by D’Oliveira-Henery and Jackson was resultantly charged with larceny.

Jackson was asked by the court to give reasons for his actions and he explained that he normally does yard chores but with no work on the said date, he decided to roam the streets because he was hungry.

Jackson is due to reappear before the court today, however, a decision on sentencing is to be made on February 25th, 2020.
