Dear Editor,
This modern-day Napoleon, a simulant of George Orwell’s `Animal Farm-a Fairy Tale,’ marches to the beat of his unconstitutional drums as his support become less and less by the day. Come 2nd March, 2020, the electorate will have the opportunity to dump him and his loyalists permanently to the self-made scrap-heap of mismanagement and unfulfilled promises, a place in history where Moses, like the lazy, high-flying Raven in Orwell’s masterpiece written in 1943, will wallow in compulsory retirement with inflated benefits for his opportunistic fidelity.
“Time for a change”, his APNIJ+AFC Election slogan for 2015, was the elixir of deception swallowed by the impressionable voting population who indeed experienced a change of masters and ushered in unprecedented hardships in recent political history. Dog food stands have been the single visible investment in the economy instead of the thousands of investors he claimed had lined up to enter Guyana. As the Guyanese saying goes, we certainly “gone to the dogs”! Oil, gold and infrastructure predated his administration.
Not without some significance, Napoleon was portrayed as a fierce-looking boar and, with its power of command of the rest of the animals, he was accompanied by fierce dogs wherever he went, and in spite of his promise to provide the good life to all, he and his retinue of pigs enjoyed the “best” of life on the Farm, while the rank and file, be they sheep, cows, dogs, hens, horses, etc, laboured with circadian routine to produce the crops etc. for use by all and sundry. The irony is that their leader. Napoleon, alone received the credit for all progress made and, whenever he had appeared in public, which was once every fortnight, he was preceded by a Cockerel which announced his presence by crowing loudly, as the sirens do for the convoy of vehicles bearing his Guyanese counterpart, much to the disruption of the routine activities of the rest of the nation.
No sooner had Napoleon led his animals in revolt against the humans that he took over the Farm House previously occupied by the latter and, incrementally, adopted stealthily all their trappings of privilege. Eventually, with equal facility of his maligned oppressors, he was found cheating, as his human counterpart also produced the identical Ace of Spades in the course of the same game of cards! Such was his devotion to the practice of transparency and accountability. How prophetic was Orwell, some 77 years ago.
Make no mistake, the solution to this travesty in our country lies with the voting population on the 2nd March, 2020. However challenged they may be by his sinister electoral devices!
