Accused in South Ruimveldt carjacking charged

A man was on Wednesday charged with a carjacking in which a taxi driver was thrown from his vehicle by two men pretending to be passengers.

Malcolm Henry, of South Ruimveldt, was arraigned before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty and pleaded not guilty to the charges read to him.

He was subsequently granted $200,000 bail but failed to raise it and was remanded to prison as a result.

It is alleged that on January 25th, 2020, at South Ruimveldt, about 5.40 am, Rameshwar Fewdyal, a taxi driver, parked at Stabroek bus park, was working hire car HB 6272, when he was approached by two men in search of a taxi to take them to South Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

One of the men sat at the back seat of the car behind the virtual complainant, while the other man sat in the front passenger seat of the car. The court heard that about 15 minutes into the journey, in the vicinity of the Shopping Plaza, in South Ruimveldt, the passenger in the back seat of the car, being armed with a knife, began to choke the driver while the passenger at the front seat of the car, pointed a gun at him. They then threw him out of the car and drove off.

On the said date, about 7 am, the car was found abandoned at Kingelly Village, West Coast Berbice (WCB).

Investigation was conducted, and two men were arrested and identified during an ID parade by Fewdyal.

Henry was identified as the individual who pointed the gun at the driver.

The matter was adjourned until April 17th, 2020.
