Suraj Veersammy, the suspect in the murder of the woman whose battered body was stuffed in a barrel which was found partially submerged in a trench at R and S Street, Belvedere, Corentyne, on Saturday last, has confessed to the crime, police sources say.

Veersammy, also known as `Radesh’, 30, a labourer, of Belvedere Village, Corentyne, yesterday afternoon told investigators that he murdered the woman after she threatened to end their relationship.

A police source told Stabroek News that the man in his confession said he murdered the woman on April 9.

Veersammy yesterday morning had claimed that he found the woman hanging when he returned home from work on Wednesday last. However, after being taken back to the house he shared with the woman, the man cracked under intense grilling by detectives.

A source told Stabroek News that the suspect had claimed that after he found the woman hanging he took her down and placed her body in the barrel which he then rolled out of the street into the trench.

The suspect also told investigators that he met the woman, who is said to be 23 years old, at a place where he sought refuge after being released from prison in November last year.

He identified her as “Vanessa” and said that she was a Venezuelan national born to Guyanese parents. Her name has since been given by the police as Devika Vickram formerly of Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo.

The source stated that after he and Vanessa started a relationship they decided to leave the place of shelter to start a life together on their own. The source said the suspect has also claimed that Vanessa would often nag at him which would start their fights.

Residents in the area had said that they last saw the woman on the morning of April 9. They recalled hearing the couple fighting on the said day.

Veersammy was arrested on Sunday under the Canje Bridge around 11 am.  It is suspected that he was awaiting a boat to head into the Canje River.

The battered body was found in a barrel in a trench at R and S Street sometime around 9 am on Saturday last.

The body with visible marks of violence was found head down in the blue plastic barrel, which was partly submerged in the trench. The body, which was clad in a green and white striped dress, was discovered with a green, white and black peacock bed sheet wrapped tightly around the neck.

Furthermore, marks of violence were noticed around the woman’s left eye, stomach, left shoulder, left hand and left leg.

The body is presently at Bailey’s Funeral Parlour awaiting a post-mortem examination.
