With the COVID-19 pandemic knocking down sporting activities around the globe like tenpins, the ‘Stage of Champions’ bodybuilding event has become the latest casualty.

Videsh Sookram, coordinator of the annual fixture, was forced to pull the plug on the show which bodybuilders, physique and bikini athletes locally and around the Region look forward to during the last quarter of the year.

In a statement, Sookram formally announced the cancellation of this year’s event due to the complications caused by the pandemic.

The lucrative event was originally scheduled for mid October.

“Well most of the gyms here and across the Region are closed, so athletes cannot train for shows,” said Sookram.

“I’ve been in contact with many of the overseas athletes and they informed me that they won’t be able to compete because of the coronavirus. So no athletes means no show this year.”

Sookram noted that the sponsors for the event have also been impacted by the virus and thought it best to plan for next year when the fifth edition will be staged.

He added that once things return to a semblance of normalcy, he will begin planning for the ‘Stage of Champions’ 5 in 2021.

“Until then, stay home and stay safe,” Sookram concluded.

Note: To date has COVID-19 has claimed seven lives locally and more than 160,000 across the globe.
