Johnson scores hard-fought win as e-Sports c/ships commence

The inaugural I-Bet Supreme FIFA 20 ‘League of Champions’ e-Sports Championship officially kicked off on Saturday evening, with Marvin Johnson securing a hard-fought win over Akil Harper in the first match of the two legged affair.

 Johnson, who is contesting the prestigious event as Liverpool, defeated Harper and his Barcelona outfit 3-2. The contest was streamlined online via the official I-Bet Supreme Facebook page.

Meanwhile, Caribbean Men’s Singles and U21 Bronze medalist Shemar Britton (Barcelona) battled to a 2-2 draw with Jonathan Hutson (Manchester City) in the second match of the evening. The second leg of the matches will be conducted on May 2nd.

The tournament is being contested utilizing an elimination format and will consist of players battling with their favorite European club for bragging rights and the label of best in the nation.

Tournament administrator Michelangelo Jacobus during brief remarks with Stabroek Sport yesterday said, “The opening night was a success, everything went smoothly in terms of the matches being played and monitored. We had two games, both exciting affairs, one of which included Caribbean Table Tennis Men’s Singles bronze and U-21 Men’s silver medalist, Shemar Britton.”

He further disclosed, “However we had some technical difficulties in streaming the matches to our social media pages, but that has since been remedied. This is our first step into the eSports arena and I’m pleased to see the response from the competitors in terms of quality of play and their excitement at being a part of this new venture. Based on this first night’s action I think we can look forward to two weeks of high quality action and entertainment.”

According to Jacobus. “Presently we are at the preliminary round (Round of 16) and all matches are being played home and away which means that aggregate scores (away goals) will come into play.  Persons who are interested in looking at the matches can check our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/iBetSupreme/ where we will be streaming all the games.”

Meanwhile, Dustanni Barrow, Manager of I-Bet said, “We had two competitive games, especially the second one and we are looking forward to the games tonight (Sunday night), we had a bit of a difficulty streaming the live videos but we have fixed that and we are at the green light for tonight’s fixtures. Everybody is excited so far and iBet is happy to bring this new form of entertainment during this time, and we continue to encourage persons to stay at home and take all the necessary precautions needed to fight the Covid-19.”

Winner of the event will pocket $50,000, two pennyweights of gold, a trophy, a case of Monster Energy Drink and a special Church’s Chicken Meal. Meanwhile, the second place finisher will collect $25,000, a case of Monster Energy Drink and a Church’s Chicken meal.

On the other hand, the third place finisher will receive $15,000, a case of Monster Energy Drinks as well as Church’s Chicken meal.

Sponsors of the event are Banks DIH under their Monster Energy Drink, Church’s Chicken, A&A Gamespot, Smoke Shack and NCN, who are programmed to stream the semifinals, third place and final. Up to press time five other matches were underway. Below lists the complete fixtures.
