Following the conclusion of the Virtual Coaches Clinic Series hosted by FIBA Americas Friday, national basketball coach Junior Hercules declared that such courses are beneficial to the overall development of the national programme.

In an exclusive interview with Stabroek Sport yesterday, Hercules crucial to the development of basketball in Guyana.

“Crucial because we can have a working (model) and establish Gold Standard and, or written value system for which we can evaluate players for the national programme.”

Hercules, who is currently the men’s team senior tactician, participated in the seminar alongside junior national boys coach Lugard Mohan on behalf of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF).   The programme, which was conducted under the auspices of  Tara VanDerveer (Stanford University) and Don Showalter (United States of America Junior Basketball Head Coach), was staged from May 7th-14th.

Asked to rate the quality of the seminar, Hercules stated, “On a scale from 1 to 10, I would say 7.”

He added that two of the major takeaways from the forum included, “(1) The theoretical framework for successful national team trials and (2) Coaches roles in the national selection process.”

Hercules says that the national programme will now benefit through the implementation of a more structured national setup.

He added that the club system will also benefit from his and Mohan’s participation by the implementation of a system and structure which allows for more coaches now to be exposed to the national team training and selection protocols.

“Local coaches can hope to benefit through a system that allows for more than one club coach being exposed to national training and selection process and insight into the thought process of trials to finals selection.”
