A Corentyne woman has been arrested after she was found with a baby she is accused of keeping from its mother for four months.

The woman, identified as Beverly Gomes, 50, of Lot 30 Kildonan Village, Corentyne, is accused of taking the child in March, in Region Seven, after the baby’s 24-year-old Venezuelan mother reportedly asked her to transport the child to Georgetown for medical treatment.

Region Seven Commander Linden Lord said the woman was expected to return with the child after two weeks but she never did. As a result, the mother reported what happened to the police, who launched an investigation.

Last week, the police received a report that the woman was in Berbice and on Thursday, a rank from Bartica travelled to Berbice, where they found the child in the woman’s care.

A police source said Gomes would visit Bartica for work. He said the woman claimed that while there the mother asked her to watch the young child while she went to run an errand. However, Gomes allegedly decided to take the child to her home in Berbice after taking a liking to her.

The baby has been reunited with her mother, while a file was sent for legal advice on possible charges.
