Beverley Gomes, the 50-year-old Corentyne resident who is accused of stealing a baby from its mother about four months ago was yesterday charged and remanded to prison.

Gomes of Lot 30 Kildonan Village, Corentyne appeared virtually at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 2 before Magistrate Crystal Lambert.

She was charged with the offence of child stealing.

Gomes was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison. The matter was postponed to July 24th.

The woman is accused of taking the child in March, in Region Seven, after the baby’s 24-year-old Venezuelan mother reportedly asked her to transport the child to Georgetown for medical treatment.

Police Commander of Region Seven Linden Lord had previously said that Gomes was expected to return with the child after two weeks but she never did. As a result, the mother reported what happened to the police and an investigation was launched.

Earlier this month, the police received a report that Gomes was in Berbice. As a result, a rank from Bartica travelled to Berbice, last Thursday where they found the child in the woman’s care.

A police source had previously told Stabroek News that Gomes would visit Bartica for work. He said the woman claimed that while there the mother asked her to watch the young child while she went to run an errand.

However, Gomes allegedly decided to take the child to her home in Berbice after taking a liking to her.

The baby has been reunited with her mother.
