Orphanages in dire need of donations

Now more than ever, orphanages are in dire need of supplies and they are appealing to the public for donations during this COVID-19 pandemic.

Stabroek News, reached out to several orphanages as they struggle to ensure the well-being of the children in their care.

Chief Executive Officer Raheema Rahaman, of the Shaheed Orphanage, told Stabroek News that the children are in need of essential supplies.

She said, the home is in need of food supplies such as potatoes, meat, and vegetables; cleaning supplies; pharmaceutical supplies, such as cough syrup and Vicks: and electronic tablets to assist the children with their Zoom classes.

According to Rahaman, the orphanage has 47 children, whose ages range from 4 to 16 years old.

She also disclosed that several students residing at the home have written the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA), and one is currently sitting the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examination.

Bless the Children Home, also made an appeal for essential commodities.

An individual (who preferred to remain anonymous) speaking on behalf of the administrator Horace Legall, informed that the home is in need of cleaning supplies, food supplies and personal items for the children.

Delving into greater detail, the person listed shampoo, tooth brushes, toothpaste, rice, oil, and tea, as some of essential items in short supply.

It was also noted that the 28 children residing at the home, are in need of educational supplies such as books and pencils, to accommodate the vacation classes offered.

The home also has four students who sat the recent NGSA and four currently sitting the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examination.

Their ages range from 7 to 18 years-old.

Ewing Enmore, Administrator of the Guyana Red Cross Society Children’s Convalescent Home, also shared a list of ongoing needs required at the home.

Enmore said, the home caters for 18 children, all under the age of 5 years-old.

He listed the items needed that included disposable diapers (stages 3 and 4, cloth touch); baby essentials such as powder, lotion, wipes; latex disposal gloves, cleaning supplies, toiletries, and food supplies such as full cream powdered milk, porridge meal, rice, potato, and meat.

The home, he said, caters for 18 children, all under the age of 5, and also is appealing to the public to make donations.
