Porter dies after jump from toppling tractor

A porter died on Tuesday while another was left injured after they jumped from a tractor which toppled while descending a hill along the Arawai Trail, Mazaruni River.

Dead is Mahendra Verria, of Leonora, West Coast Demerara. The injured man has been identified as Sunny Moore, 25 of Cornelia Ida, also on the West Coast.

Commander of Region Seven Linden Lord confirmed the fatal accident, which took place around 10.30am.

Stabroek News understands that Verria and Moore were occupants of a tractor which was towing a truck, GRR 6331, when the accident occurred.

As the tractor toppled, Verria and Moore jumped out of the vehicle. Verria and Moore suffered injuries as a result.

They were both picked up and taken to the Bartica Hospital. While Moore was treated, Verria, who suffered head injuries, was air dashed to the Georgetown Public Hospital. He succumbed around 3pm the same day.

An autopsy yesterday showed that Verria died as a result of a fractured skull.

Lord said both the driver of the tractor and the truck it was towing were taken into custody after the accident.
