Leeron Brumell has been reinstated as Editor-in-Chief of the state-run National Communications Network (NCN).

Brumell’s resumed duties yesterday, months after he was asked to proceed on administrative leave following a physical altercation between him and then Director of Public Information (DPI) Imran Khan.

Brumell yesterday confirmed to Stabroek News that he was given the option to resume duties effective immediately and he said subsequent to the meeting he agreed.

Brumell declined to say who he met with on his reinstatement. He did say that it was a great feeling to return to work with his “great team.”

“I am committed for us to get back on focusing on quality journalism in the non-print industry. We have started to build a brand for two plus years and I am hopeful we can return to building and improving the brand,” Brumell said.

Asked about the status of the reports made to the police following his altercation with Khan, Brumell said neither he nor his lawyer had followed up on the case. He noted, too, that they were not provided with a brief on the investigation by the police.

He, however, said that he will soon follow up on the matter.

The case file on the altercation had been sent for legal advice to Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

In January, a video of the altercation between the two men was posted on Facebook. It has been reported that the altercation stemmed from Brumell’s objection to an APNU+AFC coalition candidate reading the news for the station’s broadcast.

It was not clear on what basis Khan, a senior member of the then governing coalition partner, the Alliance for Change and Director of Information at the Department of Public Information, which is also housed in NCN’s Compound, intervened in the in-house NCN decision.
