Suspect arrested in Hope nonagenarian murder

Police have arrested a suspect as they probe the murder of a Hope, East Coast Demerara, nonagenarian who was found dead with marks of violence in his kitchen on Tuesday.

The dead man has been identified as Sukhnanan Dugi, called Henry Sukhnanan, 90, a pensioner of Lot 6 Hope Lowlands Public Road, East Coast Demerara.

Police Commander of Region Four ‘C’, Senior Superintendent Khalil Pareshram, told Stabroek News that the suspect was arrested yesterday and is currently assisting with investigations.

Government pathologist Nehaul Singh who performed the autopsy gave the cause of death as trauma about the head and body.

Police investigations have since revealed that Sukhnanan, who resided alone was last seen alive on Monday August 31, at around 4.00pm.

According to police investigations, the man’s lifeless body was found by his niece, who was making her routine checks on Tuesday morning.

Police said the woman went to the house at around 11 and observed Sukhnanan’s slippers at the top of his steps and upon entering the house saw what appeared to be bloodstains on the floor in the vicinity of sitting room. As she ventured into the kitchen the woman saw Sukhnanan’s lifeless body lying under the kitchen sink with his head and upper body covered in blood.

She immediately summoned the police to the scene where the body and scene were examined by crime scene ranks.

The pensioner was found with two gaping wounds to the back of his head and a third wound to the right side of his face. The left side of the face was also swollen and there were wounds also on his right hand and wrist.

A piece of wood, suspected to be the murder weapon was recovered along with a bloodstained piece of cloth on the floor, Police said.

The interior of the house, police added, did not appear to have been ransacked and there no signs of forced entry were observed. 

The body was escorted to the CC Nicholson Hospital at Nabaclis where Sukhnanan was pronounced dead.

Investigations are continuing.
