Uitvlugt miner to serve 18 months in prison over ganja

A miner was yesterday sentenced to 18 months imprisonment after pleading guilty to possessing 128 grammes of cannabis.

Jermaine Jacobs, 21, of Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Crystal Lambert at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court, on a possession of narcotics charge.

Jacobs pleaded guilty to the charge that read, on September 2, 2020, at 70 Km Check Point, he had in his possession 128 grammes of cannabis, consisting of leaves, seeds and stems, for the purpose of trafficking.

He was sentenced to 18 months in prison and fined $192,000.

The facts stated, are that the police at 70 Km check point, Regional Division #2, stopped a pickup driven by a 30 year-old of Onderneeming Sand Pit, Essequibo Coast.

At the time of the incident, it was stated that several occupants were en route to Big Hope Backdam, Waini River.

A search conducted on the individuals came up empty, however, the vehicle was then searched and 128 grammes of cannabis was discovered wrapped in transparent plastic.

Jacobs, also an occupant of the vehicle, took ownership of the parcel.

He was advised of the offence and arrested, thereafter the suspected narcotics was weighed and sealed in his presence.
